Flower Care

When you receive your bouquet from Penny Lane Flowers follow this advice to keep it looking beautiful and to prolong the life of the flowers

Cut the stems on the diagonal using a sharp knife.  Do not use dull scissors as this crushes the stems and prevents the flowers soaking up the water that they need

Remove all leaves and any thorns that will be underwater in the vase.  Any that you do not remove can cause bacteria and algae to form as they decay in the water.

Prepare your water. Most flowers prefer lukewarm water, however spring flowers such as Tulips, Irises and Daffodils prefer ice cold water

Add the sachet of floral preservative that we included with your bouquet, this helps feed your flowers and prolong their life.

Arrange your flowers into your vase and place it in a cool spot, not in direct sunlight.

Remove any flowers as they start to wilt so that they do not contaminate the rest of the bouquet.

Top up your vase with fresh water and food mix, you can re-cut the stems again on a diagonal to help them soak up more water.

Useful Tips

When Lillies open, remove the Anthers as this will make them last longer and prevent staining to your furniture and clothes.

If cut Roses begin to droop, re-cut the stems on a diagonal and place them in boiling water for 30 seconds then straight into cold water and allow them to drink. A good quality Rose food will also help prolong their life.

Do not mix daffodils and Narcissi with other flowers because their cut stems emit a slime that is toxic to other flowers.

Do not mix Flowers and Fruit in the same arrangement or place your vase near your fruit bowl, as the methane given off by the fruit as it rots it will make your flowers wilt faster.

If you follow our advice, most cut flowers will last about 7 days, Gladiolus, Statice and Lisianthus will last up to 10 days and Carnations with proper care have been known to last 21 days.
